There’s not a lot in a word
Some bacteria, moisture
And carbon dioxide.
The same carbon dioxide
That puts the world to sleep.
A noun, a noun, a noun
Is torn off in a thought storm
And it doesn’t matter
How many adjectives you add,
The weightless shred
Will never be more than noise
Flapping in the space
Between a mouth and an ear.
I would have to speak
As I breathed in, if I was to name you
And anyway it would still be a lie
Like looking into your grey grape eyes
Across a laden table
And claiming that a word from you
Is all I need to survive.
There’s not a lot in a word
Some bacteria, moisture
And carbon dioxide.
The same carbon dioxide
That puts the world to sleep.
